California
On July 31, 2019, Governor Newsom of CA signed into law AB 1540, legislation that establishes title protection for music therapy in California.
Connecticut
On May 27, 2016, Governor Malloy of Connecticut signed into law HB 5537. This legislation provides title protection by stating that music therapy services can only be provided by those who hold the MT-BC credential, and only an MT-BC can call themselves a music therapist or a Certified Music Therapist. This law goes into effect in October 2016.
Georgia

New York State
Music Therapists practicing Creative Arts Therapy and the use of the titles “Creative Arts Therapist” and “Licensed Creative Arts Therapist” or any derivative thereof within New York State requires licensure as a Creative Arts Therapist, unless otherwise exempt under the law. North Dakota
A bill to license music therapists was passed into law on April 26, 2011 under the State Board of Integrative Health Care. Music Therapists are required to be licensed. Obtain an application from their website.
Oklahoma
On April 26, 2016, Governor Fallin of Oklahoma signed into law HB 2820. This legislation creates a music therapy license under the State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. An application is available from their website. This law became effective November 1, 2016.
Oregon
On Wednesday, July 1, 2015, Governor Kate Brown of Oregon signed into law HB 2796. This legislation creates a music therapy license in Oregon through the Health Licensing Office. Information regarding the license may be obtained here.. An application is available from their website..
Rhode Island
A State License for music therapists was signed into law on June 30, 2014. Music therapists in Rhode Island must be registered by January 1, 2015. Obtain an application
Utah
State Certification was signed into law on April 1, 2014. Obtain an application.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin requires that Music Therapists be registered with the Wisconsin Department of Regulations and Licensing. Obtain an application.
